THE
PURPOSE
Adventure
In Missions is a non-denominational Christian ministry
dedicated to bridging the gap between North Americans
and the needy and neglected of Honduras. Adventure
In Missions is committed to serving the poorest of
the poor through preaching, teaching, building, and
healing.
THE
PLAN
Through
short-term mission teams and projects, Adventure In
Missions provides opportunity for individuals and
groups to experience hands-on service to the poor.
Our mission is to demonstrate God's love by alleviating
human need and suffering.
In efforts to relieve human
suffering we combat hunger, deprivation and physical
affliction with the provision of food, clothing, shelter,
medical care and other basic necessities of life.
We also help facilitate
the development of healthy, vibrant and self-sustaining
communities by addressing larger issues of education,
food security and education.
In every endeavor, AIM
seeks to exemplify Christian compassion and benevolence
while conforming to the highest standards of integrity.
THE PROJECTS
Development Projects
The average Honduran family
lives on less than $3.00 a day.
-
Wells
It
is estimated that half of the people in Honduras
do not have access to safe drinking water, and that
80% of disease is related to poor quality water.
Of the 12,000 children in Honduras who will die
of malnutrition this year, many deaths will be water
related.
During our clinics, we
have regularly observed the devastating impact of
unsafe water sources upon villagers. Consequently,
we have teamed with Living Waters International
in Honduras to assist in drilling wells. We are
able to provide safe drinking water to an entire
village for $2200.
Many villagers are hesitant to
use too much water from the new well, fearing it will
run dry. Consequently, they are taught the analogy
of Jesus as the living water and how as we draw on
Him the more blessings we receive. Similarly, the
more they use the well, the cleaner the water will
be and the healthier they will be.
-
Construction
We
believe that we have a spiritual mandate to build
for those who are in substandard housing. Families
with the greatest need are identified by local pastors.
The houses we build are normally 19 x 22 feet and
can be constructed for approximately $4,000.
We also come alongside other Christian ministries
working in Honduras to help them complete necessary
construction projects.
-
Clinics
Each
medical outreach team is able to see about 2,000
patients and treat 2500 for worms. We usually distribute
$25,000 worth of medicines and vitamins free of
charge. The cost to us is only $2,000 a year. Therefore,
for every dollar donated we are able to provide
$25 of medicines and care. We have provided for
surgeries and specialist care for those with special
needs, and are able to arrange for ongoing follow-up
for those who need it after we are gone.
Puppet shows and stories serve as a form of encouragement
and evangelism for the hundreds that wait in line
at clinics. We also give out 750 pairs of reading
glasses each trip, and use the Bible to test vision.
Many are able to read the Word again for the first
time in years.
In conjunction with the clinics we deliver Spanish
tracts and New Testaments, toys and childrens
clothing door to door. We also distribute rice and
beans as a practical way of demonstrating Gods
love.
Our vision is to develop dental and other medical
teams to further meet the needs of the people. We
would also like to provide basic hygiene, health
and preventative teaching.
Student Projects
Less
than half of the Honduran workforce has completed
grade six.
The project originated
in Colorado Barra, a remote village that is accessible
only by dugout canoe. Prior to the project, no one
from the community had completed more than grade six.
We believed the Lord was telling us that he wanted
us to use Christian young people who were sold out
to Him to change the entire country of Honduras by
giving them the opportunity and hope to reach their
God given potential.
Over the past seven years,
the project has been very successful. Three pastors
have graduated, as well as a host of others who are
now helping their younger siblings to attend school.
The entire project costs $8,000 per year and provides
housing, food, transportation, books and tuition for
all of our students.
